Structural Steel Bearing Plates – S275JR Mild Steel

Our structural steel bearing plates are manufactured from S275JR structural-grade mild steel and are designed to distribute concentrated loads from steel beams, lintels, columns and other structural members into masonry, concrete or supporting structure.
Each plate is supplied 100mm wide in thicknesses from 10mm to 30mm, with lengths available from 200mm to 600mm in 50mm increments. This broad size range allows the plate dimensions to be selected to suit the required bearing area, supporting material and structural design.
The plates are supplied in a plain, unpainted mill finish, making them suitable for fabrication, welding, drilling, priming, painting or galvanising where required by the project specification.

These bearing plates are supplied unpainted and uncoated. Surface scale, minor marks and light surface oxidation may therefore be present as part of the normal mill finish.
Where the plate will be exposed to moisture, external conditions or a corrosive environment, a suitable protective coating should be applied before installation. This may include a compatible primer and paint system or galvanising where specified.
Selecting a Bearing Plate
The required plate length and thickness will depend on several factors, including:
- The load applied by the beam or structural member
- The width and strength of the supporting masonry
- The presence and size of a padstone
- The required bearing area
- Plate bending between the loaded and supported areas
- Local crushing or bearing resistance
- The project engineer’s structural calculations
The bearing plate should not be selected solely by matching it to the width of the beam. Both the supporting material and the plate itself must be checked for the applied design loads.
Important Design Information
Bearing plates form part of the load-bearing structure and should be specified by a suitably qualified structural engineer.
The engineer should confirm the required:
- Plate dimensions
- Steel thickness
- Minimum end bearing
- Padstone or masonry strength
- Corrosion protection
- Connection or restraint details
Unless specifically stated otherwise, plates are supplied without drilled holes, welded components, paint or corrosion protection.
